In Photoshop CS5, can't get an inverse background to delete. How do I make file editable? Thanks

In Photoshop CS5, can't get an inverse background around an item to delete. Message box says can't because "the smart object is not directly editable". There must be some setting that is clicked "on" that I'm not aware of in this image file. How do I make file editable? Thanks.
