How can loop animations with a different start and end point in after effects?

I use normally loopOut('cycle') expression to loop a movement. But sometimes I want to loop like this: 1-3 frames -> rotation 30deg; 3x loop a full rotation; after looping -> add 10 other frames and make rotation 120deg. So how is it possible to loop between to other actions and not used copy+paste?

Does anybody use Duik plugin in after effect? I need some help or need a better plugin for rigging

Photoshop has corrupt my file, can only see blocks and lines

I was working on a file and after copying and pasting (I think) and then this happened

enter image description here

I tried copying and pasting all the layers to another file but it just copies over the corruption as well. I'm afraid to save the file or close Photoshop in case I lose my work because, obviously, I haven't saved in a while.

Has anyone else experienced this issue and is there anyway to fix it or should I just accept it's lost forever?

I'm using Photoshop CS5 on Mac 10.9.

Innovative ways to make a flowchart stand out?

Following my question here, I am wondering what are some innovative ways of making different aspects of a complex flowchart standout.

By aspects, I mean the different processes (as a group) e.g. for an employment flowchart, some processes could be need analysis, advertising, interview, background check, hiring etc.

For each of these processes, there are several steps involved, so they would be illustrated as a group in the flowchart.

The two ways that I currently know are:

  • Using colours

  • Using different text box borders

  • Using different shapes

Paint Bucket not filling selection?

Resizing images: how to select BOTH the image and its container?

I have had no problem uploading my svg files into adobe edge, however, I am not able to see them in the program. They are there, and I am able to see and move the outline of the image, but I cannot see the actual picture. When I view my design in the browser however, they are present.

Do I charge my first client before or after the design is complete?

This is my first serious client and their first design experience. I am designing a Logo and a business card for them. We haven't discussed price yet and I haven't started on their design either, so i'm wondering when I should charge them? Before I begin or after?

Also, How should I charge them if it's the first design experience for the both of us? More specifically , should I charge them based on the time it takes to design or a flat fee?

Why is Cinema 4D sculpting only on the back of my object?

I'm stumped as to why Cinema 4D is only letting me sculpt on the back of my object. This sounds like a problem with my normals however they are all aligned and I have already tried reversing them. I'm able to sculpt just fine from behind, but it is unproductively counter-intuitive.

Is Computer Modern a high-quality font?

Computer Modern, a font created by a computer scientist for use with his own typesetting system TeX, has become one of the most frequently used fonts of all time, precisely because of the popularity of TeX. But the question remains whether this font, created by a single person, is even suitable for this kind of popularity? Is Computer Modern, from a design perspective, a high-quality font? Notice that I am not asking if it is a good font; that kind of question would be opinion-based. However, I think it is possible to objectively judge the quality of a font, at least to some degree, just as it is possible to justly give grades at an exam.

Problem with vector shadow

I got the following made within illustrator, but i am trying to achieve the shadow effect which is on the picture to the right of the cellphone.

However, the gradient starts at the top left, and then the gradient effect doens't work.

How do i achieve the effect on the picture to the right, within illustrator?

How to convert a video file into an animated GIF in Adobe Photoshop?

I was trying to convert an MP4 into an animated GIF for an answer on here.

I tried opening the file directly in Photoshop, and then clicking on the timeline menu and choosing both:

  • Convert Frames > Convert to Frame Animation

but neither of them worked. They appeared to just flatten it into a single image.

How to convince partner that logo shoeldn't be on top of every window

I am working on an app with a team of a few people, and one of those people keeps saying that the logo of the app should be in the middle of the navigation bar in every window. How do I convince him that this really isn't a good idea and we shouldn't do this?

How to present a print project to a client?

I'm a self-taught designer and now I'm working on a packaging project. I'm designing in Adobe Illustrator CC using CMYK color mode, but now, I want to present my client the work with a mockup and I really don't know what to do.. CMYK is pretty different from RGB when presenting the final product, so the colors I chose won't look the same if I use a mockup.

What do you guys do when you have to do print stuff and want to present it to your client (of course with complex packaging stuff, no business cards, flyers, etc)?

How do I manually downsample something?

Designing Professionally themed PDFs

I am trying to find out what software goes into designing professionally themed PDFs and would greatly appreciate someone explaining the workflow. I am weakly familiar with LATEX, but I don't believe this is the way most PDF designs are made.

Are there frameworks or libraries also involved, like Bootstrap/Foundation for CSS?

Bonus: Is there service like BuiltWith.com for PDFs?

How to squeeze an outlined character?

I have a text I transformed into outlines and now I would like to squeeze some characters (an "O" and a "D" specifically), so that they become less rounded, more rectangular. If I try to resize them, the path becomes thinner, but what I want to do is to squeeze them AND keep the path width the same.

Is there any way to achieve this, other than cutting the paths, move them in the desired position and turn them into a compound path again?

First of all, I am not sure this goes here or in StackExchange.com, excuse me if I am wrong.

Is there anyway this can be done? Is there any photoshop API or something similar?

Photoshop - Image being saved in different color shade

I'm applying a colour overlay with colour of "#fa2e88" to an image. But after saving it for web, it will appear in another shade on web browser (#ff00e9, which is more saturated and brighter)

I've tried this on different image modes (RGB, CMYK, Lab Color) but the outcome was the same. One other strange things is that when I apply the color overlay and open up the color overlay popup, the color is changed from "#fa2e88" to "#ee3587".

And this is my color settings: enter image description here

Making Flowchart

I have created a flowchart that has multiple textboxes, which explain various stages of a HR activity. It has been a laborious task, as I have done it with hand. When put together, the flowchart goes over two A3 pages (laid side by side).

I want to now take this project from manual to electronic, hence I am after advice on how to professional prepare and present it for printing.

I have already typed the contents of each textbox in MS Word and I am happy with it. I have also determined the layout of the flowchart and I am happy with that too. The latter is set out on paper (as it requires two A3 pages).

The reason for my query is that I do not have a huge budget for this project, so I want to do as much as possible at my end.

Can the above be achieved in Word (flowchart function) and how do I fit two A3 amount of textboxes on one screen?

How to auto fill dates while doing a calendar?

I want to make a useful calendar in AI. Thus far I have made 12 columns, which each stand for a month, and around 31 boxes in each with days and weekdays listed. There has to be a box because I want to have a space to write some short notes in them as I'm going to print it and laminate it in dry wipe.

I have managed to create these boxes but I don't have a clue how to efficiently (not typing manually in every single box) fill the dates inside.

Does anybody know a solution?

No shortcut keys in DraftSight?

I am used to the single-letter shortcut keys in Adobe Illustrator for fast drawing, and I have heard that AutoCad has the same thing. Press "l" for line, etc.

However, I am using DraftSight, not AutoCad, and it does not seem to have single-letter shortcuts. For example, the typical drawing operations are line, rectangle, arc, circle etc, but there do not seem to be any shortcuts. If you hover over the toolbar button it announces what the button does, but does not list any shortcut. If I type letters like "l" they appear in the command window and do not activate a drawing operation.

Is there any way to get shortcuts like this in DraftSight?

Facebook Logo Guidelines

Get rid of thin white lines between shape 'joins'

I've created an icon made out of basic shapes. It's 1 solid shape and has no gaps at all.

I want to use this icon as a preloader on a website as an SVG. The idea being each 'segment' (line) fades in one-by-one. So to do this I've sliced the solid shape up so each part is it's own shape (or polygon) so I can animated them individually. I've done this but there are thin white lines in between some of the shapes (image attached). I've checked the joins and I don't think I could get the shapes any closer together! The coordinates/points seem to be the same as well when I view the SVG mark-up.

Is there away to get around this? It's really going to impact the quality/sharpness of the preloader. I'm guessing I should be able to fix this somehow as I've seen plenty of more complex shapes which don't have any visible 'joins'.

Thanks, hope someone can shed some light on this ...even if it means drawing the shape again (hopefully not though).

enter image description here

Ok here is the source for the 2 SVG's I'm working with - both are the same icon, they're just both sliced differently so I could see when each 'part' loaded in which version looked best:

SVG 1:

<svg version="1.1" id="Layer_1" xmlns="http://ift.tt/nvqhV5" xmlns:xlink="http://ift.tt/PGV9lw" x="0px" y="0px" viewBox="0 0 59.3 83.7" enable-background="new 0 0 59.3 83.7" xml:space="preserve">
<polygon fill="#79CEDB" points="29.6,70.2 0,40.6 0,54.1 29.6,83.7 "/>
<polygon fill="#79CEDB" points="9.6,43.4 29.6,63.4 29.6,49.9 9.6,29.8 "/>
<polygon fill="#79CEDB" points="29.6,29.6 9.6,9.6 9.6,23.1 29.6,43.1 "/>
<polygon fill="#79CEDB" points="29.6,29.6 49.7,9.6 49.7,23.1 29.6,43.1 "/>
<polygon fill="#79CEDB" points="9.6,43.4 0,33.8 0,0 9.6,9.6 "/>
<polygon fill="#79CEDB" points="49.7,9.6 59.3,0 59.3,40.6 49.7,50.1 "/>
<polygon fill="#79CEDB" points="59.3,40.6 59.3,54.1 29.6,83.7 29.6,70.2 "/>
</svg>

And SVG 2:

<svg version="1.1" id="Layer_1" xmlns="http://ift.tt/nvqhV5" xmlns:xlink="http://ift.tt/PGV9lw" x="0px" y="0px" viewBox="0 0 59.3 83.7" enable-background="new 0 0 59.3 83.7" xml:space="preserve">
<polyline fill="#79CEDB" points="29.6,83.7 29.6,70.2 0,40.6 0,54.1 "/>
<polygon fill="#79CEDB" points="29.6,29.7 59.3,0.1 59.3,13.6 29.6,43.2 29.6,29.7 "/>
<polygon fill="#79CEDB" points="9.6,43.4 29.6,63.4 29.6,49.9 9.6,29.8 9.6,43.4 "/>
<polygon fill="#79CEDB" points="49.7,63.6 29.6,83.7 29.6,70.2 49.7,50.1 49.7,63.6 "/>
<g>
<path fill="#79CEDB" d="M49.7,23.2"/>
<polygon fill="#79CEDB" points="49.7,23.2 59.3,13.6 59.3,54.1 49.7,63.6 49.7,23.2 "/>
</g>
<polygon fill="#79CEDB" points="29.6,29.6 9.6,9.6 9.6,23.1 29.6,43.1 29.6,29.6 "/>
<polygon fill="#79CEDB" points="9.6,9.6 0,0 0,33.8 9.6,43.4 9.6,9.6 "/>
</svg>

I've just exported these from Illustrator again so they don't include any tweakery. Not sure why SVG 1 has a 'polyline' in it? And for SVG 2 why there is a <g> with a line/polygon? All the shapes we're constructed the same way and all have only 4 points?

Thanks again, Steve

Motion graphic software suggestions

I'm attempting to find motion graphics software to visually explain complex topics.

Here's an example of what I'm after: http://ift.tt/1uHlxdS

I've looked at Houdini, After Effects, Boris, etc., but all of those products seem to be overkill for what I'm trying to do.

I'm just looking for a few standard shapes/images (and ability to import my own images) that I can move around and voice over.

Photoshop Automation

I'm am fairly new to the photoshop automation tools, but I am a long time user of photoshop.

I am trying to find a way to export each of 8 layers inside of a group individually while maintaining the visibility of the other layers in the project. What I am trying to accomplish is a exporting 8 PNG images that just have a single element replaced.

My current method is to manually unhide each one of the 8 layers and manually export.

I am looking for some behavior that is similar "extract assets" where the exported files use the layer name.

What is the general stance on "jump headlines"?

This is more of a design opinion question, and this might be the wrong place to ask this, but I digress.

I work on a weekly newspaper that up until now has used "jump headlines", that's to say there's a second headline where the article picks up on a different page.

Looking around at other publications, especially the big ones, I've noticed that very few newspapers do this so I'm just looking for some opinions here. Are jump headlines useful in newspaper layout or do they just take up space and act redundantly?

Photoshop cc 3d Shadows

Photoshop Layer Comps are too large

I'm making wireframes for a complex dashboard. I have 40+ layer comps and my 10MB photoshop file is turning into a 30MB PDF. I've already trimmed away unused layers and don't see what else I can do?

I've been doing this for a while and never had a file with such bloat. (Then again this is the first one I'm doing with 47 layer comps.)

Css, line-height

I am trying to figure out how line-height in css works. I am setting body line-height to 1.5em ( 24px ). And I am using a link tag with font-size 24px.

I am expecting the total height of the inline element to be 24px. With times new roman it works as expected but when i use a custom font say open sans latin extended, the height of my link is 33px.

I think line-height changes according to the font-face used. Am i right?

Editing text from Master Page?

In InDesgin, if I create an object (a tinted rectangle, for example) with a blank text frame inside it on a master page, will I be able to enter text on my document pages?

I can't seem to figure out how to do this.

I'd rather not have to copy/paste these rectangles onto every page of this document since they are positioned identically on each page.

How to add images to existing PDF file in Photoshop?

I have a PDF of a purchase contract and I need to add an image of my debit card to it. So far, I've opened the image of my card in a separate file and used the magnetic lasso tool to select it. In another window, I have my PDF opened. I've tried using the "Paste Into" command to paste the image into an rectangular area I've selected, but two things happen--

  1. The image of my card is automatically greyscaled.

  2. I cannot transform the image at all. I would like to shrink it so it fits the dimensions of the layer mask.

I've noticed that the paste into command is not creating any new layers. Could this be because I'm opening a PDF? Should I be converting the PDF to a different format? If so, how?

Thanks all.

Does my very ugly website violate any general tenants of graphic design?

I'm learning how to use AngularJS (a Javascript framework used in web development), so I decided to throw together a website to test out some of its features. The website is mostly comprised of static, expository content, with a few examples of the framework's features in-action.

My problem is that the website looks really ugly, and I want to develop a more comprehensive understanding of exactly why this is so ugly. Here's a screenshot:

enter image description here

These are the steps I took to produce this somewhat hideous-looking website:

  • I looked through the Google Fonts database for a nice-looking, simple sans-serif font to incorporate into the project.

  • I wanted to find a balanced color scheme (I don't know anything about color theory) so I started with a simple olive green, and used variations of the initial color (based on its hue/saturation/lighting values) to style distinct sections of the website, navigation links, and headers.

I think the end-result looks pretty sloppy.

Are there any general tenants of graphic design that my website violates? Perhaps with respect to the text, color, and/or layout proper?

Note: The horizontal rule is *especially* ugly, but this was just a test to see if I could make a custom `<hr>` against a transparent background-image.

Hiding parts of images falling outside the page

I'm using an image that it a lot bigger than my page and I don't want to make it smaller. Problem is, I see it entirely in my inDesign window, not just the part fitting into my document, but the rest of the image too, extending far beyond it.

Is there a way to hide this part? I don't need it and it distracts me too much.

Is there a way to enlarge the InDesign interface elements?

I'm using inDesign 9.2 since yesterday and I find the interface elements incredibly small. For example when selecting the TEXT tool and looking at the options on top bar (fonts, alignment, etc), it takes some effort to, say, increase font size by clicking on the up arrow in font size section:

Is there any way to make it look a little bit less ant-like and make it easier to use?

Including ASP (active server page) to reduce amount of pages downloaded?

I'v designed a good amount of sites, but I'm currently designing an e-commerce site for a pretty reputable manufacturers. They have more pages than I'v dealt with, and I'd include ASP for anything that is the same page layout, but different information. But how would this work for so many pages? Does it need to be narrowed down? I usually do results.asp but do I need anything else before I make a bad move? HTML/CSS/JS I'm good with, but ASP is something rather new to me.

can someone please help me and tell me how could I do this border effect in Photoshop? imagemagick convert: changing color profile

I use the imagemagick convert command to create thumbnails for the web from large images.

convert y2.psd[0] -resize '80x40' y2.png

Some images uploaded by a customer are CMYK Photoshop files with very large custom icc profiles. A 3Mbyte photoshop file turned into a 1.2Mbyte png file, even though the output png size was 80x40. The rest of the png file seems to have been profile information. When I run

convert y2.png -strip y2stripped.png

the file size goes down from 1.2Mbytes to 2kbytes.

I'm not too worried about including any profile information with the thumbnail, but I would like to know that the png has been properly produced and does reasonably represent the original image. I can't find any information on telling convert what color profile to use for the output image. Is color profile handling in convert well defined, please? How do I ask it to produce output with a specific color profile?

I did a pdf presentation with a simple layout with a first part with clickable numbers. All those numbers are buttons that activate a "popup" with texts and pics. On desktop it's quite ok, it works, but on iPad the "show/hide button" function doesn't work at all.

This presentation must be shown in different places so I can't use internet connections and I'm trying to resolve this problem designing an indipendent presentation.

I know that with Adobe DPS I can create different interactive presentations but I'm looking for alternative solutions.

I've also created a simple html page with menu and popup, but I can't show this file on ipad because the folders system is obviously different from a pc. For this, I downloaded an app, "document" by Readdle. [link] (http://ift.tt/1vDQ4Km). But when I open the html page a lot of background img are missing even if they are in the same folder, without any external links.

Is there anyone who has had the same problem? Thank you.

group ungroup in Office Powerpoint Online?

Is there any way to group/ungroup objects when editing a presentation in Powerpoint Online? I only have access to the online version of Office 365 at work, but it is a pain to have to move the objects one by one if they can't be grouped.

Any ideas?

Abeatbykai similar font

I'm building an iOS 8 app and would really like to use the font abeatbykai. This font is free for personal use and no commercial use, but I was wondering how can I buy it to use it for commercial use (App Store). Or if you know of a similar font that I can use for apps.

How to avoid 1.23 decimal point uneven unit value in Photoshop?

When I drag the icon to left and to right in paragraph panel of Photoshop for tweaking the paragraph styling, changing the value of space before and after paragraph, I get uneven unit value like 1.23 with decimal point. This is really annoyed to me. Do you know how to turn it off so it will get, for examples, 1, 2, 3, 10, 20, 30 values only?

enter image description here

And is there a shortcut to change the value to 5px, 10px, 20px, etc...?

Thanks in advanced.

Finding intermediate colours between two xyY colour points

I am working in an application where I need to know the intermediate points between two xy coordinates in CIE 1931 colour space.

In the picture below we can see that a linear transition (straight line) between A and B will go through a series of other colours, and I am struggling to find a mathematical way of describing the transitions between A and B in order to get intermediate points.

Any ideas?

Apply layer comp in linked smart object only to specific layer comps in root PSD?

I'm using Photoshop CC for UI design.

Let's say I've got 3 buttons as separate linked smart objects. Each button has a layer comp for a pressed and a not-pressed state.

I place the linked smart objects in my root PSD. What I'd like, is for there to be 3 layer comps in the root PSD. One for each button being pressed.

Is there a way to make this work using only 1 instance of each smart object in my root PSD?

Or do I need to have 2 instances of each smart object in my PSD (one for pressed and another for not pressed) and then hide/show the relevant layers to get the desired effect?

Thanks!

Smooth rounded boxes in Illustrator and path end angles

I'm new to Illustrator but have a decent background in Photoshop and After Effects. Anyway, I've spent a good amount of time creating this logo in Illustrator and am unhappy with the results. It's likely that I've used the tools incorrectly.

Here are my list of questions:

  1. The rounded corners don't seem to connect to the straight lines in a smooth fashion. How would I clean that up? Is this caused by the fact that I used a path/stroke? Should I have taken a different approach?

  2. I cut angled corners off the "B" on a rasterized layer in Photoshop. How would I make sharp angled ends on a path in Illustrator?

  3. Is there a way to approach creating a design like this that will auto-magically make the outer wider rounded corners have a wider radius? Or is this something I'd have to do manually? I really dislike how dirty it is a the moment.

How can graphic designers contribute to Open Source projects?

I want to participate in Open Source projects, but I cannot code (that well. Or.. at all).

I would love to contribute to GitHub projects, but as a designer I'm not sure what's the best way to do this (I mention GitHub because it makes it really easy to find stuff which is already happening, but any platform would apply).

What's the place of a graphic designer in the Open Source world, or what are some good practises when deciding to join a project of these characteristics?

Is there a way to batch remove the same background from multiple images?

Someone asked me a Photoshop question the other day, and after some time thinking on it I couldn't come up with an answer - hoping someone here can shed some light!

Let's say I've got a batch of photos of people all standing in front of the same textured background - for example, headshots against a studio background. If I wanted to remove the background from all these photos, there are a few ways to go about it; the problem is all methods I know are manual, and large batches become pretty tedious.

Now, let's say the background in each photo was stationary (maybe a few px of wobble), and I had a photo of the complete background without any figure blocking it. Would there be a way to use the complete background as some sort of inverse/subtractive mask, so all you're left with is the person? At the heart of it, this is about automating the process of removing the same background from every image - so any alternate methods are welcome too. Thanks in advance!

How can plainness to being transformed be visualised in a logo design?

Am trying to visualize my concept for a beauty lounge logo design, but am not sure which elements would really convey the message...plainness to transformation - appearance wise. I don't really want to use cliches, like a woman's face, eyes or some of the usual. I need something eccentric.

Resources on producing responsive design wireframes and artwork, for graphics designers

We're developers who partner up with a graphic design studio for our project artworks. Some times they even bring in the clients themselves and we both cooperate to get a development project done.

  • They develop the website artwork, develop the sketch ups for the client to decide etc.

  • We develop the website(code it and the rest of the technical stuff).

They have recently asked me to recommend them some good resources to read on the subject as they no longer want to design only for desktops. I have told them there are plenty floating around on the Internet, some paid and some not.

Can you recommend some good resources(paid or free) for non-coders (such as graphics designers), to learn about responsive design, how to design assets for responsive design, how to develop sketch ups/wireframes for the customers, how grid works etc?

They basically want to be able to provide sketch-ups to customers for each device, how the grid will break on different devices, how to design their assets/artwork etc. It's a matter of cutting us out of the loop and design on their own the whole project, then deliver the wireframes to us and the artwork and we could easily take it from there.

  • Online courses are ideal.

  • Short books ?

  • Maybe interactive courses like what Codecademy does for programming?

  • Anything else you think will help non-coders to get the basics

Go to next frame on Photoshop timeline

Is there a name for a Wikipedia-like "W"?

Font commercial license?

I am a bit confuse what is font commercial license for?

Do I need commercial license under this circumstances?

  1. designing a banner for small client.

  2. Using a font and then alter its shapes into a logo for client.

Also after I purchase the license does that mean I may need to purchase it for my client as well? (even just a small job like designing a banner.)

Which free serif fonts have the U+202F non-breaking thin space glyph?

I am looking for free serif fonts containing a glyph for the U+202F NARROW NO-BREAK SPACE (i.e. a non-breaking thin space).

A Palatino-style font would do fine. I already checked TeX Gyre Pagella but the non-breaking thin space glyphs fails.

What is wireframe-esque design style called? Is it made solely with pen tool?

Wondering what this wireframe like designing style is called. I've seen it for years but never really felt the urge to ask. I also wish to know if it is made solely with the pen tool in ps/ai or if it is a differing method ie.very precise stroke manipulation through multiple layers from an original image be it a 3d render or real life product shot. I honestly don't know how I don't know the specific term used for it seeing as how it is so popular within my community (although mainly mobile and desktop devices).

Thanks for any help you guys can give!

How to visualize combinations of data for a gene discovery application?

What kind of a visualization/chart should I use for showing all the ways you can choose from a set of items? (i.e., number of possible combinations)

Concretely, I am showing potential offspring from two animals, where each parent may possess some number of genes, and the offspring inherits 0, 1, or both parent genes of each type. The genes have fun names (e.g., fire), and sometimes combinations of those genes have their own names (fire + pastel = firefly), but this is beside the point.

Here's a simple example that shows 3 and 2 genes from parents (with 1 shared), which makes for 2^5 = 32 possibilities.

The current UI (below) shows the list of possibilities, but nothing visually conveys the magnitude (In this case each is equally likely 1/16, but in many cases some possibilities will be 2/16 or 4/16). In other words, nothing about the "graphic" visually shows the user how likely each outcome is. Secondly, it would be great if the outcomes which share commonality (i.e., contain same genes) could be visually related.

enter image description here

My idea is something like a diamond shaped graph, or layered network, where at the top is the outcome where all genes are chosen, and below that a row of nodes with N-1, and so forth until the bottom row has 0 selected. Edges would connect the nodes beween layers with shared genes. Size of nodes could indicate probability. Something like this graph (but ignore the data).

enter image description here

I'm aware of Punnett Squares, but I'm not sure it's the best for combinations of this order (for one it doesn't not combine equivalent outcomes).

Update

Number of results depends on how many genes the parents have combined (2^N). I expect most of the time it will be with 1-4 gene parents each, so not more than 7 genes total, or 2^7 = 128 possibilities. Also, if there is any duplication between parents this is less. For example with 2 of the 7 being shared genes, that makes 54 possibilities. (See this example live). So most of the time I think 10-50 results.

How to make PNG-quality animations in GIF format?

I've noticed more and more sites using animated GIFs that have PNG quality. You'd think they're the latter if you didn't check the image info. The lines are crisp, the colors look great, there's none of that slight-but-still-noticeable graininess that GIFs get. How are people accomplishing that? I'm not a graphics designer but I'm curious and I'd like to create such animated GIFs that have no recognizable loss in quality compared to GIFs. (I use GIMP but I do have access to Photoshop, if required.)

Downloaded GIF Breaks Halfway Through When Viewed in PS CS6

I had downloaded a .gif online, then opened it in photoshop to view the animation in greater detail. However, for some reason the .gif breaks around the 28 layer mark, and all subsequent frames and layers are copies of that individual layer.

I don't think the problem is with the .gif itself; when viewed through other media, such as internet explorer, it shows the entirety of the animation without the weird layer-copying business. I've tried everything I can think of, but I can't get photoshop to display the gif correctly.

If anyone can help me out, I'd greatly appreciate it!

Change color for a complex logo without using Pen Tool?

  2. How can I change the colors of this logo?

Isolate a Collection of Thin Lines from a Photograph

Question

I have a photograph (shown below - quality reduced to meet upload size limit) of a paraglider with an inflated wing. I would like to extract the paraglider, wing, and the many thin lines (approximately 2-5px wide in most places) between the two for use in another composition. The paraglider and wing themselves are simple enough matters, but how can I select/reproduce the lines while minimizing my selection of the sky?

Background

Ignoring the region where the lines are in front of trees/ocean (but bonus points if your answer covers these regions!), my thoughts were to use color selections to cut out chunks of the sky - and this works in some capacity, but seems messy - there's lots of semi-transparent remnants that I have to remove and clean up by hand.

I've also tried using a black-to-white gradient layer on top of the image with an overlay or soft-light blending mode in order to normalize the lens-flare, then amping up the contrast to really give the lines definition, producing decently consistent black silhouettes that I feel may be good foundation for a mask - but I still struggle to isolate even the thin black silhouettes from the background.

My final thought is to hand-trace each line with vectors and either use the resulting path for a selection, or stroke it and play with blending in the new composition to reproduce the lines from scratch. Normally this would be my first course of action for encountering such a problem, but I was hoping there might be less time-intensive techniques that I'm unaware of!

Fonts similar to Ubuntu Condensed?

We're experimenting with using Ubuntu Condensed as our website's primary font. The non-condensed Ubuntu font has too much width, and feels splayed out. Previously, we were using Signika.

It's sometimes recommended not to use a condensed font as your primary font, so we're considering other comparable options. Can anyone recommend non-condensed fonts with a look that's comparable to Ubuntu, but which are narrower than Ubuntu Regular? Alternatively, is it fine, in terms of legibility and other considerations, to just go with the condensed variant?

How to auto fill dates while doing a calendar?

I wanted to make a useful calendar in AI. The purpose of it is to make 12 columns which will stand for months and then around 31 boxes below with days and weekdays (Mon, Tue, ... ) It has to be a box because i want to have a space to write some short notes in them as I'm going to print it and laminate in dry wipe. I manage to create these boxes but i don't have a clue how to efficiently (not typing manually in every single box) fill the dates inside. Anybody know a solution?

Proper way to "Link" 2 image frames together to create a thumbnail version of that image frame (that auto-updates)

I've looked around a bit and I can't seem to find what I'm looking for, hopefully you guys can help.

I'm building a calendar template for a client because he has 15-20 different calendars he needs to generate with different pictures. He also wants the back page of the calendar to contain thumbnails of the 12 images featured in the calendar.

How can I "link" 2 image frames so that if he changes the image on page 3, it also updates the thumbnail for page 3 on the back of the calendar?

It sounds like something that could be done, but I haven't found anything because I keep finding tutorials how to span one image across multiple image frames, which isn't what I want to do.

(I just found that I could "modify all occurences of linked file" and replace it with my new image. This sounds like it could do what I want, but I'm just wondering, is there a better way? Or is there a reason I shouldn't be using this?)

Thanks alot!

How can I import a multipage PDF as a multipage page layer in Adobe Acrobat

I've got a 288 page 4-colour PDF and a 288 page text black PDF. is there a way that I can import the text black PDF as a layer across all the 288 4-colour pages? At the moment I can only seem to do this manually one page at a time.

What's more important, baseline font-size or baseline line-height when creating grids based on a modular scale?

I'm trying to understand grids based on modular scales and how to use them in web design. From what I understand, there's two ways to decide a baseline value for your scale...using your baseline font-size (1rem) or using your baseline line-height (1rem * 1.6).

CSS Frameworks like Foundation seem to prefer baseline font-size and will use that value in the grid like so:

.myDiv {
padding: 1rem;
margin-bottom: 0.5rem;
}

Other CSS frameworks like Bootstrap seem to prefer baseline line-height and will use that calculated value in their grid like:

// $baselineFontsize is a pixel value like 14px
// $baselineLineHeight is a unitless number like 1.4 or 1.6

$baseline = $baselineFontsize * $baselineLineHeight;

.myDiv {
padding: $baseline;
margin-bottom: $baseline * 0.5;
}

// or, based on em:

.myDiv {
padding: 1em * $baselineLineHeight;
margin-bottom: 1em * $baselineLineHeight * 0.5;
}

What are the main differences between using font-size vs. line-height as your baseline? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each? Will they lead to a distinct looks?

Illustrator CC 2014 - SVG coordinates keep shifting position

I'm using Illustrator CC 2014 to create a sprite sheet for use on the web. The artboard and icons are 16px wide. My problem is, the positions of the icons seem to shift, and I can't figure out why. The icons should have an X position of 0px but they keep changing back to -0.0007px after I edit the X position. Sometimes the icons themselves change size too; I could click on one and it would be something like 16.03432px wide. Why is this happening?

I thought it might be the reference point, but i have the art board and all elements set to top left and X: 0px.

The problem for me is when I export as an SVG, the image is sometimes a pixel off which messes up my sprite display on the front end.

I have a link to the ai file in question: http://ift.tt/1zyP6Ws

Making Graphics for a Website

I am making some graphics for a website header. I will be drawing them in adobe illustrator. How large should I make them so that they do not end up blurry, and how should I save them?

Imitating Gaussian Blur with Smart Blur

Last year I used a 1% Gaussian Blur for a photo project. Today I'd like to recreate the same blur effect in a non-destructive way, with the Smart Blur function.

However I'm struggling to find the appropriate Radius, Threshold and Mode settings to approach the 1% Gaussian Blur.

Does anyone know how to convert Gaussian Blur settings to Smart Blur? Or which Threshold and Mode the smart one uses?

Thanks in advantage.

Export iOS Icon Sizes in Affinity Designer

Although Affinity Designer has the extremely useful @1x, @2x and @3x export, I'm wondering if there's a way to export in the variety of sizes that are required for an iOS icon?

I found a concise grid of needed sizes here, which i'll reproduce in list format:

  • 1024x1024

  • 180x180

  • 152x152

  • 120x120

  • 87x87

  • 80x80

  • 76x76

  • 58x58

  • 57x57

  • 40x40

  • 29x29

That's 11 different icon sizes!

I did find the whole Export Persona with slice configuration concept to be excellent, especially since you can apply slices to individual layers (say, for the normal and pressed versions of a button). Is there some way to use this same tool, perhaps, to do specific sizes of exports?

How can I create a spherical perspective grid in Photoshop or Illustrator

How can I create a spherical perspective grid in Photoshop or Illustrator CS5 where the poles are shown on the top and the bottom (exactly like the image below).

I have explored the 'polar grid tool' in Illustrator and the 'Vanishing Point' filter in Photoshop. Neither of these tools are able to create this kind of perspective grid.

If possible I would like to find a method that allows customizations like, setting the number of concentric and radial dividers like how the 'polar grid tool' works, rather than trying to build it with shapes or something..

Thanks for any help

Design Favorites and Ratings on same page of app

I hope I am asking this in the right place, but it seemed like the best/ most appropriate. I have an iOS app and it shows menu items at restaurants. Now on this page users can either rate this item or favorite it. And I am wondering how/ what is the best way to set this up. I want to use a star for favorites, because I think that is most intuitive (and I can't think of anything else to use). But I also want to use starts for ratings, as that is also a common practice. But I think having starts for rating and for favorites might be confusing on the same page? Wondering what your guys opinions are on this.

It would say rate beside the rating stars and there would be 5 of them. and then favorites it is just one star beside the title of the item.

Thanks for the help in advance.

How to "live preview" when changing colors in Illustrator (Like Photoshop.)

  • Hi all,

  • I'm a bit used to Photoshop and I just started to learn Illustrator but there's a little thing that's really bothering me.

  • In Photoshop when you are changing a color you can see it previewed on the object as you're selecting..See this GIF to understand what I mean: http://goo.gl/s9UlXS

  • It helps a lot with choosing the right color.

  • But in Illustrator you have to "apply" the color every time you want to try a slight change.That's very frustrating.

Is there an easier way to distress graphics in illustrator? [duplicate]

This question already has an answer here:

Recently I've been getting a lot of work with T-shirts and they ask me to distress t-shirts. This is a simple matter if the graphic is only one color, but occasionally I will get a graphic that's 4 or more colors and layered on top of each other. I will then have to apply a distressed texture to each separate shape. This can get tedious and time consuming. Not to mention the texture file is huge because it's distressed and creates a lot of points.

Do you guys know of a way that I can place a distressed texture on top of a vector graphic with multiple colors and shapes and just punch through or knockout all the way to the back of the stack? I hope that makes sense.

Here is an example.

example

There is white around the letters and the filled in areas on the face are white as well. I want the distressed graphic to punch through all the way, but when I use the minus front, it ends up only punching through some shapes or it all fuses together as one big mess.

If it helps the t-shirts will be screen printed.

How to make a shaped gradient transparency in photoshop cs5

I am trying to blend photos into a colored background, ridding them of the their edges. I have tried many techniques including the quick mask option -> filter -> artistic -> inverse and cut out middle etc. In essence all I'm trying to do is:
