InDesign: Why are my text frames shifting down slightly when I copy them from a master page and paste in place to other masters and pages?

I am creating a number of business card variations in InDesign CC 2014 on a Windows 7 Professional 64-bit system. I am attempting to copy text frames from one master and paste them in place on another master.

However, when I paste in place my text frames shift down slightly. It also appears that sometime different text frames shift while others stay in the proper place.

I've done my best to check all aspects of text formatting to make sure I'm not accidently adding whitespace or changing line height before a chunk of text.

Has anyone else encountered this issue, and if so, do you know a solution?

Making a cartoon from image copyright issues?

I'm making cartoons in Illustrator from images I've found on the web i.e using the pen tool to outline the body and filling in colour. These cartoons are to be published in a magazine. Do I need permission to use the original image?

Sorry, I'm fairly new to this!

Thanks

Is there a more configurable alternative to Photoshop's Extrude filter?

I really like the Extrude filter (Filter > Stylize > Extrude), but it isn't very configurable so it tends to give similar results each time.

So I'm looking for an alternative method or plugin that can generate similar pseudo-3D effects, but allows more options for the shape of the extruded elements, such as pyramids, cylinders and blocks.

Transparency lost when placing a Photoshop CS5 image into Illustrator CS5

When placing a Photoshop CS5 image into an Illustrator CS5 file I'm losing the background transparency. Have never had this happen before. PDF's a acting the same way.

Indesign: Master pages not applying correctly in the right order

I'm guessing this is a pretty simple problem I'm having. I'm new to indesign and can't figure out how the masters apply to the pages properly.

For example, I have a 3 page master and I drag down the first page - fine; I drag down the second page - fine; I drag down the third page and the first page displays instead of the third. It also happens when I try to put the first page of a 2-page spread on the right-hand page.

Is there a setting I need checked or unchecked for this? What am I doing wrong? Sorry if this is a really simple problem.

What is the size of a smiley if i want to design it for a mobile app?

I've designed some smileys but when it came to developing the app, some of them were stretched.. so i figured out it might be an issue with the design of the smiley.

The smileys I'm trying to achieve are like the Facebook Emojis.

Thanks in Advance!

I am just trying to clip an image with some complex path. After I applay the clipping, the image just won't show.

Adobe Illustrator CS2: Can not print the illustration - what is this and how to fix?

WinXP SP3, AI CS2 update from 12.0.1, Acrobat 9.5.2 Pro - had lived in great comfort on a one machine for years before AI refused to "print" files as PDF.

The investigation revealed that:

  • AI does not print any file, including a newly created;

  • AI does not print on any of the installed local printers (not network): PDF, common Canon, VentaFax (error "Can not print the illustration");

  • AI does not save through Save As EPS and as PDF (error "Can't save the illustration. Can't print the illustration"), in AI /SVG it saves.

I have tried to make a complete removal of all AI settings, reinstalled AI, installed it on a virtual machine and so on. The effect equals zero. It is known that all distributions are original. One can only guess where else to dig.

Would really like to know

Overlapping text with InDesign's data merge

I'm trying to set up a book of song lyrics with a two-column layout. I'd like to pack as many songs as a page as will fit, so I tried doing a data merge with multiple records per page.

This works great, but wastes space because it forces only one song per column:

enter image description here

Since each song has a different length, I tried making the lyrics section a variable height using Auto-Sizing:

enter image description here

But when I do that, the resulting document overlaps a lot:

enter image description here

Is there a way to use auto-sizing height but have it not overlap?

I know this is mathematical but what is this

I realize this isn't primarily a graphic design question, and more on the lines of programming, but this has to have a name.

Adobe Flash - Sliding Expandable Banner AS2

I have an ad designed where the banner pops up over a movie on mouse over and subsequently disappears when the mouse is taken away and restarts the movie. Code is AS2.

I need to change the way the expanded banner shows. Currently it pops in but I would like it to slide in from right to left.

Code as follows:

import flash.external.*; import com.greensock.TweenLite;

C_Height = 205; C_Width = 444; C_Unexpanded = 150; C_Zone = "zone50";

MyButton.onRelease = function(){

getURL("http://Removed for privacy", "_blank");

}

MyButton.onRollOver = function() { TweenLite.to(MyButton, .5, {_width:C_Width}); TweenLite.to(Expanded, .5, {_alpha:100,onComplete :function(){ }}); TweenLite.to(Unexpanded, .5, {_alpha:0,onComplete :function(){ Unexpanded.Animation.gotoAndStop(1); Unexpanded._visible = false; }});

Expanded.Animation.gotoAndPlay(2);
//Expanded._alpha = 100;
Expanded._visible = true;

ExternalInterface.call("showFlashContent", C_Zone, C_Height, C_Width, "", "", "", "", "left");

}

MyButton.onRollOut = function() {

TweenLite.to(MyButton, .5, {_width:C_Unexpanded});
TweenLite.to(Expanded, .5, {_alpha:0,onComplete :function(){ Expanded._visible = false; }});
TweenLite.to(Unexpanded, .5, {_alpha:100,onStart :function(){ Unexpanded.Animation.gotoAndPlay(1); }});

Unexpanded._visible = true;

ExternalInterface.call("closeFlashContent", C_Zone);

}

// Load Movies

Unexpanded.attachMovie('MC_Unexpanded','Animation', 1); Unexpanded.Animation.setMask(UnexpandedMask);

Expanded._visible = false; // Expanded._x = 580; Expanded._alpha = 0; Expanded.attachMovie('MC_Expanded','Animation', 1); Expanded.Animation.setMask(ExpandedMask); //Expanded.Animation._x -= C_Width/2; //Expanded.Animation._y -= C_Height/2;

Any ideas?

I have tried every option. Every option I can come up with anyway!

Cheers

Changing multiple text layers

Hello. I have a photo I want to print on a t-shirt

The trouble is that My printer is asking for an AI file

I have been working on this as a raster file for a long time (its a pencil drawing I wanna print on t-shirt

I just converted them to AI files via opening on illustrator and re-saving them

WIll this result in the printer printing out the white space, (which is winthin the photo, not the artboard)? I want the white to be purely tee shirt itself.

How do I export an SVG from Illustrator such that it renders well in small sizes?

I come from a Photoshop background and this is my first time dabbling with AI.

I would like to show my product logo in a small size on a webpage (about 15px height). I currently have a PNG (created in Photoshop) but the font is quite choppy. I am assuming it has to do with the scale.

To fix it, I am now trying to work in Illustrator and saving as SVG. I've tried a bunch of things but the logo shows up very nicely in large sizes, but not small.

Here's how it is big:

enter image description here

But here's how it shows when it's close to the size I am looking for:

enter image description here

How do I make the smaller text smoother on my webpage?

I have tried setting anti-alias in the Character window but it's disabled. Should I even try using an SVG or should I try fixing my PNG in Photoshop?

When I draw a rectangle in Photoshop, it does not place it on any layer

When I draw a rectangle in Photoshop, it does not place it on any layer. This seems like unusual behavior.

  1. Create a new document

  2. Unlock Layer 0.

  3. Click on Layer 0 so it's selected.

  4. Draw a rectangle in my document.

At this point there is still only Layer 0 in my layers tab. If I make a new layer, then delete Layer 0, the rectangle is still there.

What am I misunderstanding about Layers in Photoshop? In Illustrator this would have added a rectangle to the selected layer.

Need legal advice: New business owner asking me to remove a past personal project

A year and a half ago, I did a personal project where I created beer bottle packaging and branding for a fictitious brewing company called Bottle Rocket Brewing. You can see the project on my site here: http://ift.tt/1M7yFqe

Today I got an email from somebody who is starting an actual Bottle Rocket Brewing company in another state and they requested that I remove the project from my website. This is their site/logo: http://ift.tt/1yfB5HB

I'm arguing that it's a personal project and I'm not profiting from sales of the design in any way, nor am I using their actual logo (because I created my designs before they created theirs.) They still are insisting I remove it and claim that I'm profiting from their company name.

Am I legally obligated to remove the project or can I safely ignore it?

How to tile a pattern in Illustrator?

I have joined two same sized rounded rectangles creating 90 degrees. Then I made 45 degrees guide and copied figure so they both can be on the same guide.

enter image description here

Then using a blend tool I evenly distributed figures every 9mm.The result I copied and pasted every 24 mm to get this piece of pattern: enter image description here

Now I want to crop it and save as a pattern. But before that I did Object > Expand ang grouped it to prepare it for cropping. As on the previous stage it wouldn't crop at all. I'm not sure how to do it right so I created a square and placed it in the centre of the group.

enter image description here

After cropping I've got some weird lines on the shapes. Also my pattern does not tile smoothly. Here is the result: enter image description here

Why do I have these thin lines on rounded rectangles? And more importantly, how can I make this pattern tile smoothly?

Why does Sketch sometimes resize non-proportionally while holding shift?

In my Sketch document, I have a picture that has a similar aspect ratio to some other things on that page. If I select both the picture and a shape and then resize while holding down shift, the resize is not always proportional. At some sizes, the red guides will appear and snap the image size to match something else on the page — this breaks the proportions I'm trying to keep.

Here is an animated gif showing the behaviour. Note that the kitten is often distorted at smaller sizes. (After I made this gif, I thought the problem might be that the hand is a symbol. I tried doing Detach from Symbol, but the resizing problem remains.)

What's going on here, and how do I keep the image proportional at all sizes?

Illustrator: create shapes out of other shapes

Can anyone recommend a way to create a shape out of other shapes? I'm not sure of the correct term. For example, how would I go about making a circle made up of of different sized squares. See the attached as an example of what I mean.enter image description here Thanks Mimi

How can I measure PX distance between two points on the fly?

I am a programmer, not a designer. So I often need to know how many pixels a certain element is far from top or another element. But I am not sure how to measure this on the fly in the Photoshop CS6.

I changed the ruler to Pixel values. I then zoomed in and made two guides between two points I want to measure. It looks something like this

Is this a proper way to measure the distance? If yes, how do I measure it now? I am sure that Photoshop has a better option than that I have to count pixels from the rules by subtractions.

If this is the wrong way, what is the quickest way to measure the distance between two points on the screen?

Photoshop: How to make background transparent without impacting image quality?

I'm really new to Photoshop. I use Indesign and Illustrator reguarly but not photoshop. I have a picture of a product (books basically) that has a white background and I need that background to be transparent. I found a few tutorials that helped, but when I follow those I find that the image ends up looking grainy or not as clear. What is the best way to change the background to transparent without losing the image quality?

How to create a Yin Yang in Pixelmator

I have been trying to create a Yin Yang effect in Pixelmator and, whilst I have been relatively successful using a number of well-placed semi-circles, this method fails when I try to add a stroke to my shape, or change its colour.

So this is what I have done so far - please bear with me as I'm fairly inexperienced with graphic design software in general!

Combining semi-circles...

...to create a Yin Yang effect...

4 semi-circles seem to do a good job of creating the effect. However, if you try to add a stroke that will go along the centre curve, the obvious happens:

...doesn't work when adding stroke

So I have tried creating a third semi-circle to blank out the lower half of the shape. Ideally I want to find a way of telling Pixelmator to delete this section of the larger semi-circle:

Using a blanking shape...

I have merged the layers, although I'm not entirely sure what I should do next. If I try and give this layer stroke, I get this effect:

...still doesn't work with stroke...

And if I try and give it a fill, this happens:

...or fill!

Essentially, I wonder if I'm actually going about this completely wrong. I would be extremely grateful if anyone could offer any advice on the best way to achieve this.

Calculating Fold Lines Based on Paper Thicknesses?

I am wanting to know how do you calculate the curvature distance a fold line may produce based on paper thickness?

For instance I am wanting to do artwork on a thick paper stock and I want to make sure my artwork is within the folds instead of perhaps very close to it. As what I am doing is on small thick boxes, it is critical that I can work this out.

Many thanks.

I have an svg image made in Inkscape with about five raster images embedded in it. Each of these images is used many times (up to 72). Can Inkscape somehow minimize it and have each unique raster embedded only once?

When using the rectangular marquee tool, are there guides to show the center while selecting?

When selecting something with the rectangular marquee tool, I'd sometimes like to see where the horizontal and vertical center are. Is it possible to turn on some kind of guide that shows center information, or at least some kind of grid?

What's the reason of this statement? "Content is usually best served by appearing as far left as reasonably possible" [on hold]

I was reading "Ordering Disorder" Grid principles of Web design from Khoi Vinh, in where he mentions that without much explanation.

He got a long copy (8 units wide) inside a column of 10 units, in where originally he was using the most left unit as a left margin and the most left as a right margin. He moved the copy to the beginning of the most left unit, leaving 2 empty units at the far right for the reason of leaving it as far left as possible.

The original idea looks fine for me, with balanced space at both sides. Here how it looks. And the final idea here

Why exactly?

UPDATE: As required, I provide more info to give more context from the book, hope it helps.

Keep background layer when cropping (script)

I know that if you choose "Delete Cropped Pixels" in the crop tool, that it will preserve the background layer, as a background layer. However, I wished that I could still maintain this function when cropping without the delete cropped pixels option checked as well. It seems like a silly thing to have to recreate that layer as a background manually every time. Is there a script out there that can do this?

Exporting SVG in mm instead of px in AI

I am trying to export my vector graphics as SVG. Inside Adobe Illustrator everything is just right, measured in mm. But when I use the "save as" option it always converts it to px (scale factor around 1.25) which leads to heavy rounding errors and I want to use it for a CNC where accuracy matters.

So is there a option I am missing to stop it from scaling or a adjustable export scaling factor?

Or should I use another software (working on Mac OS X)?

How do I convert a red color scheme to a green one without making it look "brighter"

The current color scheme for my desktop uses a red palette. I would like to change it into something green instead so I went through the color scheme configuration file and "rotated" all color values so that RGB becomes BRG. For example, (214,73,55) becomes (55,214,73).

The impression I got was that the green color scheme looked way brighter than the old red color scheme. Apparently this is because we perceive the different colors with different intuitive brightness levels. Is there a formula I can use instead of a simple RGB rotation that will keep the same apparent brightness for the green version of the color scheme? Are there guidelines as to how to best convert a whole set of colors from one base hue to another?

Is there any Photoshop plugin similar to the extrude filter?

This filter effect for me is one of the best, when using the Photoshop. However, when searching in Google, I haven't found any alternatives to it. The Extrude filter, that is located in the stylize menu, contains too little configuration. The result of using extrude filter is too similar. I'm looking for an alternative to this filter effect. Otherwise, I'm looking for Photoshop plugins, that can generate a random 3D effects (blocks, pyramids, maybe circles and other), like extrude filter in Photoshop.

Chrome/Other browsers changes the colors of a picture

So I've been having this issue on my home desktop, where the colors of a picture could be completely different from the actual colors, when the browser renders it out. I am only having this issue on my desktop at home using Google Chrome, it works fine on my laptop and work PC, also using Google Chrome!

I've come to the conclusion that this is something driver related, I just don't know what to do about it .. Would anyone have any ideas? Also any idea to where else I could be posting this? I wasn't sure, started searching around and ended here figuring it'd be okay to post here! :P

Here's how it looks in Chrome: http://ift.tt/1DZL0rX

And in Internet Explorer: http://ift.tt/1ETWNG5

The box to the left is a div with background-color:#093148;, the image to the right should be fading to that color. But as you can see, that's different in Chrome :/ I have a GTX670 driver version 347.88, if that matters :)

Maybe icons should represent the action instead of the medium / device?

I have perused questions about icons becoming outdated. I think the problem is that they usually derive from a physical object rather than the action involved (noun instead of verb). Even the spelling of words can change over time, to say nothing of pronunciations and different languages overall...

Has there been useful research with conclusions about:

  1. Designing icons that do not depict outdated (or soon to be) objects.

  2. Icons that are valid across cultures and time - not based on words.

  3. How many icons people can see and respond to at once (eg: the Ribbon).

  4. Making icons that would be translatable to blind people (this is less important to me, but seems like a consideration).

Yes, it looks like 4 different questions, but really, I am trying to get at the "essence" of what an icon is, apart from what culture it derives from. Please consider these as angles of a single question.

Why this is important to me: If software can be used by people around the world with different languages, and everyone knows (or can be shown) what the "Save" button means, then there is an underlying - wordless - understanding. I would call this "right-brain" knowledge. I think that left-brain methods, concepts and ways of communicating are far overused, at the expense of the faster and more powerful (for some purposes) right side skills. I would like to help move toward using more of the "brain" / human capacity in a more natural way. Thank you.

selling web template design price

I have a front page web template design. And they like it and ask me if I want to sell the PSD project. I’m not sure how much I should sell it? Also, they like to send me a list of modifications. Maybe they like to add or change something too. I would like to sell the design, but she is asking what would be the price of making improvements? I have no idea about the price. I’m afraid if I set it too high or too low. Does that mean there is another price for selling the web design template? AND another price for making improvements? OR Should I add them together?

Getting Transparent Images from Photoshop into Illustrator

Simply, I am trying to bring an image made in Photoshop into Illustrator for the purposes of creating a vector image for a t-shirt design.

The image has only one layer and contains transparencies. I have tried saving it as png, pdf, psd, eps. I have tried several methods to bring it in; simply open it normally, copy/paste, "place", drag/drop... all with each type of file mentioned.

But nothing worked as expected. Every method yields the same result - the background in illustrator is solid white and all transparency is lost.

Note: Yes, the transparent grid is visible, the image is definitely not transparent after it is brought into Illustrator.

I can get my transparency back by tracing with the ignore white option selected, but unfortunately that's not an viable solution as there is white in the image itself that needs to be retained.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Show users horizontal scroll is available on mobile

I am working on a project, where in the basket, just before checkout, a customer can see which seats he has selected, in which part of the room etc. Sadly, there is so much information necessary, that I can't show it on one line.

This is why I have chosen to make that specific div scrollable horizontally. One problem though: on mobiles, the div doesn't get a horizontal scroll-bar when viewed on mobiles.

I therefore need to create some kind of "call to action", so a user knows he can scroll horizontally on that specific area. What could I add design-wise, so a user knows he can interact by scrolling horizontally?

I have tried to activate a scroll bar, but it's impossible to do by code, that's why I resort to the graphic design part of SO now :)

What is this 'one colour' design trend and how can I reproduce it using a stock photo?

I had thought that the current trend towards 'one colour photos' was being called 'monochrome' but can't seem to find any examples.

The attached picture illustrates what I am referring to. The photo has been darkened and edited to match the colour palette of the website.

One Colour picture

What is the best way to achieve this in Photoshop from a source jpeg. Bonus points if it can be done without leaving illustrator.

Is this likely to be a colour overlay layer style with a blend mode?

How to create a white halo for an arrow in Illustrator?

I am looking for a way for a black arrow to have a white halo to stand out against a colorful background in Illustrator. Adding an additional stroke helps for ordinary lines, but does not outline the arrowhead.

Most efficient way to adapt current mockups to different devices and resolutions

Ok, so I've completed about 90 screens of mockups in Photoshop for an app. The mockups are done for iPhone 5 / iOS7 (640px by 1136px). Everything is calculated to pixel-perfection.

Now, management wants to see the mockups on iPhone 3GS / iOS6, iPhone 4 and iPhone 6, as well as how it will look like for Android devices.

The normal way is to go back to Photoshop and create a new set of 90 screens and re-adjust/position everything for iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 6, and then for Android-based systems, that means I need to do mockups for Samsung Galaxy Note II, Nokia Lumia, Windows Phone, HTC and 750 other types of phones out there.

Now, doing and documenting 90 screens alone took like 3 - 4 full weeks....THERE'S NO WAY IN HELL (nor is there time) to do for all phones.

So, with my current iPhone 5 mockups, is there any quick way to re-adjust it to most of the devices asap? Or is it actually easier for the dev team side to fix this?

Need some advice. Tks!

How to calculate a good background for a small image? (procedural background)

I want to frame favicons. A size of a favicon is usually 16x16 (could be bigger). The frame would be 160x100. Favicons have different shapes and colors (I don't know ahead of time what favicons look like), and I'd like to compute a good enough background. Could be plain color, could include stripes/patterns.

There are naive ways to do that (compute dominant color and derive background color with good contrast), but I'm wondering if there would any smarter way to build a nice background.

Think about Chrome's new tab page, but instead of screenshots, framed favicons:

Should i get a color or b/w print for proofing my work?

Im a freelance graphic designer, most of my works includes, visual identity, posters, flyers, and almost everything printed work. Usually i just send an email JPEG sample, but now a i'been asked to design a magazine. In the first 2 editions i had trouble with the client for some "errors" so now i want them to sign a "dummy" printed magazine, something to cover myself. But i dont know for how long im gonna be doing this magazine. On the other hand always giving a printed sample is going to give me a more professional look? besides i could hand over my stimates, invoice printed, so 2 questions here, should i get a printer? wich one, color or b/w?. Thnxs for read and answer!

Font size on iOS7 looks different from Photoshop even though resolution in mockup is same as iPhone dimensions

I'm facing a weird issue here.

I did a mockup for iPhone 5 + iOS7 in Photoshop, and since Photoshop handles font size in points, I passed all these info with the mockup file to the dev team. (e.g: Header A is 32pt, Body text is 20 pt etc.)

However, it seems that when these font size values are applied in the app and iPhone device, the font size looks enormous!

Is there something I'm missing here? Maybe mobile devices compute font sizes differently? I thought a 32 pt font would look like a 32 pt font anywhere, maybe give or take a few pixels, but not to this kind of huge difference.

Any insight?

Tks!

Why are my corners "inside-out" in Illustrator?

Illustrator path discrepancy

There are 2 big things I don't get about this image (two identical paths in Illustrator, one of which is reflected, with a pretty simple brush applied to them both in order to highlight the issue)

  1. What are these "inside out" corners, and how can I get rid of them? It is nothing to do with the brush because I've seen this happen with very simply shaped paths (i.e. a basic 1-2pt stroke on a triangle) as well.

  2. I'm also curious how the exact same shape has a stroke applied in a completely different way. The above shapes are identical except for (obviously) being reflections of one another (this is the above shape deconstructed.

Some notes:

* These are two identical paths (as noted above) with a stroke applied to each simultaneously.

* To make the shape, I merged a circle with a triangle, then adjusted the points manually.

* One is a reflection of the other, so they should be completely (symmetrically) identical.

InDesign RGB to CMYK Problems

I created an InDesign document (4 pages) that has various shapes that are different colors (yellow, green, etc.). The shapes are InDesign shapes (not imported graphics). We originally created the document to be exported as a PDF and shared online. The green shape color we used (a neon green) looks fine in RGB. However, when we try to export the document to CMYK (we decided that we need to be able to print the document on a CMYK printer also) the neon green color turns into a dark, forest green color. I'm pretty new to InDesign and I'm not sure how to replicate the neon RGB green to look the same in CMYK. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

Y axis' negative direction seems confused in Illustrator. How can I fix it?

enter description here

Hi !

When I pull a line from ruler up on the Y axis, Illustrator shows negative value for the line which should be reverse in fact. What I know is, top and right side must be positive for Y axis. I don't understand why it keeps doing this. Heelp!

Get rid of tiny space lines in seamless pattern? Illustrator
