Triggered by this question I have started to wonder if there's any truth to the common belief that we somewhat subconsciously associate colours with certain abstract values. Think 'red is passion', 'blue is the mind', 'green is healthy' et cetera.
I have been teaching a beginners' design class for some years now, and a fixture of the lesson about colour is the 'association' quiz: I name a colour and have the students guess what general associations Western culture has with them. Usually, they are not far off the mark.
Thus, my question: is there any proof, preferably scientifically sourced, that these colour associations are actually common among a large and diverse population of people? Or have I been teaching nonsense all these years?
