Apprentiship vs degree to be a UI designer

If I wanted to be a UI/ UX designer, which would be the better route? Get an apprentiship and earn experience (and use online resources to learn techniques) OR go to university after college a levels and get a degree in graphic designe?

If you think an apprentiship is better could you maybe say which area within apprentiships I should do to be a UI designer.
