Is there a script out there that adds numbers to layers?

Is there a script out there that adds numbers to layers like you would see in a table design. I use Photoshop to make changes on the fly as we rapidly prototype things in Photoshop. I try to stay as organized as possible but its time consuming to do that. I find myself wasting tons of time trying to navigate through the layer pallet. If the layers pallet had a numbering system that I could turn on and off I could get a better sense of where I am. I was thinking that I couldnt be the only one who has thought about this. Someone must have a script!
