Path Segment Reshape

I recently watched a few designers and a video by Adobe on Path Segment Reshaping. After seeing this put to use I gasped at how much simpler it made vector drawing become, and knew I could use this technique to hasten and ease my drawing! However, when attempting to do so, it does not work.

• I will draw a shape made of straight lines with the pen tool.


• Then when the shape is completed, go to the pen tool's menu (with pen tool, add anchor point, delete anchor point, and convert anchor point)


• I grab the 'convert anchor point' tool, because it's in the same place these other people grabbed their tool from.


• I attempt to grab a path to warp it, but then get an error message

So is there a preference or specific workflow I need to have selected? I don't understand how it is not working.
