How can I create this shadow effect in GIMP?

Here's this nice image. I have some .png tiles that I would like to combine to a collage with each tile dropping shadow to the left (or right). I have tried Filters > Lights and Shadow > Drop Shadow, but that just adds extra space around my tile.
