Text wrapped in tree roots (Photoshop or illustrator)

I need to make a logo that has some text that is being wrapped and enfolded in tree roots. Sort of like the text is underground and the roots are trying to grow around the text. I can't find any tutorials on this, and I know how to do it with basic flat shapes, however this needs to look as realistic as possible.
