Illustrator: create shapes out of other shapes

Can anyone recommend a way to create a shape out of other shapes? I'm not sure of the correct term. For example, how would I go about making a circle made up of of different sized squares. I would later want to make different more complex shapes of course but what would be the best way to tackle this. See the attached as an example of what I mean. Thanks Mimi
