Can someone explain more about DPI PPI and LPI

I want more knowledge , i have a fairly reasonable understanding of photoshop, and beginning to learn more about illustrator

but could you explain it to me and what the importance of it is, i tend to just star a doc with 300dpi hoping this a good starting point...probably a lazy assumption.
