Fill an area with pattern image in Illustrator?

I'm trying to fill a shape with an image pattern in Illustrator. However when I save the filled shape, it shows up white (the default color for the shape).

It seems that the Graphical Styles are overriding my filled pattern. There's a white Graphical Style and when I click it, it shows me the original colored shape (white).

How do I prevent the graphical styles from overriding the fill or create a new primary graphical style with the pattern?
