Correct way of using a combination of serif and sans-serif typefaces for both web and print

I am a print as well as web designer and have always wondered how to use a proper/correct combination of serif and sans-serif typefaces in an article.

This goes for both print and digital publishing(web). How do factors like legibility vary between both these forms?

Examples would be great!
