Illustrator can't open .ai file [on hold]

Adobe Illustrator CS6 reports that "the file "xxxx.ai" is in an unknown format and cannot be opened",

I've tried to open file in another version of Illustrator, used some third party tools.

Nothing I've tried works.

Can anyone advise something effective?
