Why can't I retain fonts and textures in Illustrator CS6

A client sent me their Illustrator CS6 file, but when I open it, their original fonts don't show up and the textures in the design are gone. The fonts get changed to a default font on my computer and the formatting is off. Does the client need to save their file in a way that I can open it and retain all their original stuff?
