Create open corner rectangle in Adobe Illustrator

I'm brand new at creating icons.

I have an issue regarding changing the shape of an rectangle. The bottom one is what i have. But i like to change the rectangle to look something like the top rectangle.

i have of course tried to get it to work. By using the pathfinder window. But it gives an different result than i expected.
